Should Grade 12 University English be a requirement for university?

For me, there is no doubt English should be a requirement for every university program. Whether you’re looking to go into sciences, maths, or arts, I believe having great oral fluency, reading comprehension and writing skills is very important.

ORAL FLUENCY- This is a skill that will lead to success in presentations during your university career. Whether your subject be english related or not, this skill from english class will give you the right components to effectively explain your point. This can also be translated into many University level jobs. High status jobs will most likely require an employee to present their ideas to their coworkers in an effective and professional manner. For instance, a person studying Health Sciences may not directly need English class, however when they are practicing in medicine, it is expected that they have the ability to speak to their patients in a formal and professional way. If you cannot communicate effectively others will assume a lack of education.

READING COMPREHENSION- In all University courses you will be required to read material, such as out of a textbook, and be able to understand and follow what it is trying to teach you. In University courses, topics are at a high level, so it is important to keep increasing our reading abilities in grade 12 to prepare us for the readings in University. There will also be times where you will be required to research on your own. English also helps you determine the reliability of a source, as well as giving you the skills to analyze beyond what is written to gain a further grasp on the subject.

WRITING – This is another skill that will be very important regardless of your program in university. From essays and long responses, to Emails with your professors and quick answers, writing is something that is always important as far as making your ideas as clear as possible. As an example, picture the brightest and most creative student, they may come up with fantastic ideas, and overall just be very outside of the box with solutions, but if they are unable to articulate and write out these ideas they will never be able to share with the world, or get the marks they deserve. This translate along through life, communicating problems you have through email, delivering presentations created by yourself, and many other things, requires a great deal of accuracy and competency in your writing.
